Plastic Micro-recycling Plant

Our world today has a big problem with waste. In Malaysia, this is also true. Although recycling is slowly becoming more common, it is easy to still see a lot of illegal dump sites around. Our Open Workshop is located in Pandamaran, Klang, and this area is no exception. We believe it is important to offer a new solution to this problem, which is why we have been working on a mini plastic recycling station over the past year. This system can take a wide variety of plastic waste (including the common ones such as bottles and packaging) and shred it into tiny pieces. Those pieces can then be sold for higher value (because it is already processed and more condensed) or it can be used to mould into reusable shapes for example bowls. We are looking to raise funds to make sure this project will be a success.

The Project

Problem

Our world today has a big problem with waste. In Malaysia, this is also true. Although recycling is slowly becoming more common, it is easy to still see a lot of illegal dump sites around. Our Open Workshop is located in Pandamaran, Klang, and this area is no exception.

Solution

We believe it is important to offer a new solution to this problem, which is why we have been working on a mini plastic recycling station over the past year. This system can take a wide variety of plastic waste (including the common ones such as bottles and packaging) and shred it into tiny pieces. Those pieces can then be sold for higher value (because it is already processed and more condensed) or it can be used to mould into reusable shapes for example bowls. We are looking to raise funds to make sure this project will be a success.

Who?

The principal beneficiaries are the students as they will be able to learn how to be part of the solution for this problem and also how to use the machines. However, the surrounding community will also benefit from a more engaged student body and a commitment to reduce waste on the streets in this area. Ultimately, it will lead to a cleaner and greener environment for all to enjoy.

Why?

Plastic waste lying around public areas is not only damaging to those who have to see it and feel that their community is polluted, it is also bad for the environment as plastic decomposition takes a long time and pollutes the ground and the water.

Size and Measurement

We are not exactly sure how much plastic we will be able to process. The machines work quite well so it will be dependent on how many plastic we can gather together with the students from the surrounding area.

Impact Parameters

What?

Reducing plastic waste, and hopefully other related wasteful behaviour as a ripple effect.

How is it measured?

By offering a mini recycling plant to the local area so that there is ownership of the entire process by the community.

Biji-biji Initiative

Organisation
The Biji-biji Initiative is a social enterprise that aims to share progressive ideas with everyone. We champion sustainable living, reuse waste creatively and we love collaborative production. By using discarded materials and basic electronics we aim to inspire our surrounding with fresh and fun approaches to sustainable living.
Our creations all come from our Open Workshop in Klang. If you would like to explore your ideas and collaborate with us, we have the space, tools and expertise to share with you!

Short Bio

We are doing outreach work with a few schools in the Pandamaran area. We have been teaching the students about upcycling and they are interested to learn more.

How they help

Once we have raised the funds to realise the project, the students can help to gather plastic recyclables to run through the micro-recycling plant. We can then use the shredded plastic for further projects (using an injection moulder) or to sell to raise funds to support any community activities in the school.

Describe Needs

We need the funding to improve the design of the plastic shredder and injection moulder, to make it work seamlessly and be safer for students independent use.
