PERSATUAN KEBAJIKAN DAN PERKEMBANGAN MASYARAKAT NEGERI JOHOR
English is a global language that is universally acknowledged as one of the major lingua franca of the world. In the Malaysian educational context, English is taught as a second language. It has been observed that although Malaysian students have between 11 to 13 years of exposure to formal English lessons in schools, their command of the language is still far from satisfactory. Chong, Tan and Mardziah (2011) revealed in their study that a growing number of Malaysian students are unable to produce coherent utterances or written text in English. This is an alarming situation which needs to be addressed, as Malaysia is a developing nation aspiring to be a key player in the global business world.
Solution: In view of the above problems, Improve Your English Language Campaign for Primary School Students was initiated together with Majlis Guru Besar SJKT Negeri Johor to help improve the standard of English among the primary students in Johor. The students will be supplied with extra English Activity book ( Little Champ) which follows the latest government English syllabus. The activity book will be used by the students during class and also at home. The campaign will be coordinated by Majlis Guru Besar SJKT Negeri Johor which involves the teachers , students and head master of the respective schools. The campaign will be able to raise (not perfect) the proficiency level of the primary students and at the same time increase the confidence of the students in speaking and also reading books. Therefore the students will be equipped and motivated to continue to improve their own proficiency after the campaign.
The project is targeted at 3000 Year 1 and Year 2 primary school students in Johor.
1.0 Reading and Writing Students learn to improve their reading comprehension and reading speed while practicing skills such as predicting content, skimming, scanning, drawing inferences and conclusions, guessing meanings of new vocabulary from context and summarizing information. Students then respond to the reading material through discussions and writing in English.
2.0 Structure and Speaking Practice (SSP) The SSP incorporates listening, speaking, vocabulary and grammar appropriate to specific levels to give students opportunities to practice language in real and meaningful situations. Students are trained to target accuracy through the application of both the form and the function in fun, activity-based situations.
3.0 Conversation Students practice conversation skills using practical real world English and strategic skills that they are exposed to depending on their level of proficiency. The main purpose of this component is to build students’ speaking fluency. Students get to express their views on different issues and on level appropriate themes which help broaden their vocabulary and functional use of the language.
Majlis Guru Besar SJKT Negeri Johor will consists of all the head masters of primary schools in Johor will be involved to coordinate the campaign.
