Raising the English language level of weak and disadvantaged students at New Era UC
This project will introduce a new English–language programme to help students do well at the tertiary level.
The program uses applications and new teaching approach that would lift the English level of a very large number of students from MUET Level 2 to MUET Level 4/5 within a much shorter time than existing teaching methods. The students should also be able to pass the Cambridge Business EnglishAssessment.

Two hundred thousand graduates in Malaysia are unemployed mainly because of poor English; 73 percent of SPM leavers do not speak employable English; and over 500,000 teachers in Malaysia lack the ability to use IT to improve education.
While there are several existing English language institutions and programmes, the learning period for such courses require months and even years, are expensive, and employ methods that are out of date and unappealing to the younger generation of students.
Students are also not sufficiently motivated or inspired to learn or even attend English language classes. They sometimes see a hopeless situation of lifting themselves from low competency level of the language.
The challenges to learn English must be addressed
We will be working with a social enterprise group that has developed a method using new teaching approaches, technical applications that are student-teacher interactive, and is more interesting. And as the programme can be taught to a larger number of students and at a shorter time-frame, it is cost-effective.
The immediate target beneficiary will be the large number of students at New Era. University College who come from home background and schools where English is not s commonly used language. These students will not do well in tertiary institutions and later in careers because they are unable to gain Englishlanguage competency under existing teaching methods. By going through this new English programme to be introduced their English competency will be greatly improved. Eventually the proposed English language teaching method would be replicated in other institutions.
We believe subsequent cohorts of students in New Era University College and those in other tertiary institutions in the country, having similar problems, will be helped by the new English language problems.
The supporters will be students who need this English language course as well as parents
Other than that, the management of New Era University College is keen that the project succeed. The management members include the Vice-chancellor Dr Mok Soon Cong, and the two deputy Vice-chancellors Prof Voon Phin Keong and Prof Lee Kam Hing.
